The Marist War Eagles opened the 2018 AAAA State Playoffs with a 61-20 win over visiting Heritage (Ringgold) at Hughes Spalding Stadium Friday night.
The War Eagles scored early and often, opening the game with a 42-yard touchdown run by QB-Connor Cigelske on their first offensive play. Cigelske would account for three touchdowns and 149-yards rushing in the game in addition to throwing two touchdown passes (37-yards and 26-yards) to Kyle Hamilton.
Marist held the Generals to negative offensive yardage in the 1st Half and took a 34-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Marist opened the 2nd Half the same as the first with Cigelske running for a 66-yard touchdown on the first offensive play for his third score of the night. With the score 41-0, Heritage got on the scoreboard on their first offensive play of the 2nd Half via a 56-yard halfback pass play from Nolan Letzgus to Clint Petteys. The next three series saw each team score. First Matthew Dunmon for Marist ran in from 14-yards followed by Heritage’s Wes Lozano scoring from 3-yards followed by another Dunmon 5-yard score.
In the forurth quarter, backups and second teamers played on offense and defense as Thomas Rollauer ended the scoring for Marist with a 9-yard touchdown run and Heritage QB-Nick Hanson hit Tyler Dyer with an 8-yard touchdown pass at the end of the game.
Marist will travel to St Pius X for their 2nd Round game this Friday night. St Pius X beat Cedartown 38-6 to advance. This will be a rematch of an early season game between the two teams that the Golden Lions won 17-0 at Marist.
