Wildlife habitat at OLA, thanks to scout’s Silver. It looks like future plans for an outdoor classroom at Our Lady of the Assumption School and Church have received a boost thanks to the efforts of Jillian Bertulfo, a 7th grader and Girl Scout Cadette.

As part of the Cadette’s silver project, the highest honor given to Girl Scout Cadettes, Bertulfo had the grounds at the school and parish certified as a National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat by surveying the grounds and documenting resources. She also built and installed a roosting box for birds to keep warm in the winter, planted native plants and flowers to attract butterflies and other pollinators, and completed all necessary paperwork to receive the certification.

Colder temps tempered by Myer’s efforts. Peter Myer, senior at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School is renewing his efforts to bring warm coats and blankets to those withoug shelter via his second year of collections for the Open Door Community.

After delivering mor than 100 coats and blankets to the downtown Atlanta shelter in 2013, Myer is working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has set up collection boxes in front of HIES’ Upper School.

The Open Door Community, at 910 Ponce de Leon Ave. N.E., is a residential community for the homeless which serves breakfasts and soup-kitchen lunches, provides showers and changes of clothes, offers a free medical clinic, and conducts worship services, among other services.

Last year, when Peter was dropping off his donations, Eduard Loring, a Presbyterian pastor and Open Door co-director, asked him if he knew how to fuel a good heart.

“I said, ‘No, how?’” asked Peter.

“And Loring said. ‘Help other people.”

Donations can be brought to the school at 805 Mt. Vernon Hwy. N.W., Atlanta 30327.
