Dunwoody's Memorial Day observance at Brook Run surpassed expectations and attracted a surprising number of young families eager to pass on tradition. The main speaker was Col. Billy Shaw, who grew up in Dunwoody and was graduated from Dunwoody High. Shaw is Deputy Commander, Combined Forces Special Operations Command-Afghanistan and Commander, Afghanistan National Army Special Operations Advisor Group. As a special operator, he said, the motto is to “free the oppressed.” He cited the bravery of the 230 men and women in his command who gave their lives to protect the people of Afghanistan. Shaw currently is working on his Ph.D. from Auburn University. Shown with Shaw are Rev.Wiley Stephens, senior pastor of Dunwoody Methodist and retired state Sen. Jim Tysinger, a World War II veteran.
