While craft beer makes up just ten percent of total beers sales in the U.S., sales have been growing at double digits for the past ten years. Even people who don’t normally drink beer are trying craft beer, partly because like wine, the experience is not just about the taste but also about the stories, people and culture behind them.

In response to demand, craft breweries are proliferating throughout the country. In fact, according to the Beverage Association, the average American lives within ten miles of a craft brewery.

Craft beer – made by small independent breweries using traditional methods and ingredients – is definitely here to stay.

As of this week, Dunwoodians have a new place to experience craft beer. The first Georgia location of Tampa-based The Brass Tap, owned by two former Atlanta corporate executives, is opening in Park Place on Ashford-Dunwoody Road.

Samy Onsi, a native of France, discovered The Brass Tap by chance two years ago in an article in an online publication. He was so intrigued that he and his wife drove to Tampa to see for themselves. Before even meeting with anybody at the company, they visited all five locations there.

“I fell in love with it,” said Onsi, “and so did my wife.”

So did a neighbor here in Atlanta, Mary Kate Roesch, now his business partner.

Founded in Tampa in 2008, The Brass Tap is an upscale craft beer and wine bar that offers more than 200 varieties of imported and local craft beers, plus signature cocktails and a large selection of premium wines by the glass. Many of the craft beers, usually around 80, are on tap. The various selections are offered on a rotating basis to maintain customer interest.

In addition to beer, wine and cocktails, Onsi and Roesch’s location is introducing a new food menu that includes a variety of healthy salads, premium sandwiches and wraps and half-pound Angus burgers.

The Brass Tap plans to offer a variety of entertainment activities, such as live entertainment on weekends, trivia night and sports broadcasts. Happy hour on Monday through Friday, 4:30-6:30, is intended to attract people working in offices in the Perimeter Center area with select appetizers at 50 percent off and daily beer, wine and cocktail specials.

The pub will also offer brewery events. Tap Takeovers will feature the wines of local breweries, and Brewery of the Month will offer month-long special pricing on the wines of select breweries.

“We’ll add events gradually,” said Onsi, “depending on the response from patrons.”

To encourage loyalty, The Brass Tap is offering a membership program called the “Brew Crew” through which regular customers can earn points toward gift items and gift cards worth hundreds of dollars.

This week is devoted to staff training and final touches. Onsi and Roesch opened The Brass Tap to the public on Monday. For more information, go to brasstapbeerbar.com.
